The Legend of Sangkuriang

A long time ago, the ancient land of Sunda was ruled by a king and a queen who had but a single daughter. Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She was beautiful and clever but also pampered and spoiled.

One day as she was weaving in her pavilion, she became moody and distracted, which caused her to keep dropping her shuttle on the floor. Once when it fell she exclaimed she would marry the one who gave it back to her. At that very moment her dog Tumang, a demigod possessing magic powers, came up to her with the shuttle in his mouth. Dayang Sumbi had to marry him.

They lived happily together, and Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a baby boy, human in appearance but endowed with his father's magic powers. She named him Sangkuriang. As the boy grew up, he was always guarded by the faithful dog Tumang, whom he knew only as a companion and not as his father, Sangkuriang became handsome and brave.

One day his mother asked him to go hunting with the dog and bring her venison for a feast. After hunting all day without success, Sangkuriang worried about facing his mother empty-handed. Desperate, he took an arrow and shot the dog. He returned home and handed over the meat to his pleased mother.

Soon after the feast, however, Dayang Sumbi questioned her son about the absence of Tumang. At first he evaded her queries but finally told her what had happened. She was horrified and struck her son so hard on the temple that he collapsed. For that, the old king banished his daughter from the court and she was made to roam around the kingdom. Sangkuriang recovered with a large scar on his temple, and he too left the court to wander about the world.

Years later, Sangkuriang met a beautiful woman and instantly fell in love with her. It was his own mother-they did not recognize each other. He pro¬posed to her and she agreed to marry him. On the day before the wedding, as she was caressing her fiancee's hair, Dayang Sumbi detected the scar on the temple. Horror struck her, for she was about to marry her own son, Sangkuriang. Without revealing the whole truth to him, she tried unsuccessfully to dissuade him. Desperate to avoid the marriage, she set conditions she thought impossible to meet: Sangkuriang had to make a lake that filled the whole val¬ley and build a boat for the couple to sail in, all before dawn.

Sangkuriang started to work. His love gave him extraordinary strength, and he used his magic powers to summon the spirits to help him. With boul¬ders and mud they dammed the river in the valley and the water rose and began to form a lake. In the early morning hours he chopped down a huge tree in the forest and began hollowing it out to make a boat. When Dayang Sumbi saw that he was about to accomplish what she had thought impossi¬ble, she called on the gods to bring the sun up early and thwart Sangkuriang.

The cock crowed, the sun rose much earlier than usual, and Sangkuriang realized he had been deceived. In a fit of fury he cursed Dayang Sumbi and kicked the half-finished boat back into the forest. There it lies upside down today, forming the mountain Tangkuban Perahu (Upturned Boat). Not far away is the stump of the tree Sangkuriang had felled, now called Bukit Tunggul. The dam Sangkuriang had built caused the valley to become a lake, where both Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi drowned themselves. They were never heard of again.

The Legend of Surabaya

Formerly, in wide of ocean,there was a fight between a shark called Sura and a crocodile called Baya. They quarreled just because of scrambling for prey. Both of them were strong,skilful, clever, ferocious, and gluttonous. They had quarreled many times, but no one had won or failed. Finally, they made an agreement.
“I tired of this continuous quarrel, Baya,” said Sura. “I did so. What we have to do to stop our fight?” asked Baya. Sura, who had owned plan to discontinue their fight, immediately explained, “To stop our fight, we better divide the authority territory into two areas. Me, as the ruler of underwater,  and I must prey on the prowl just in water area. While you as the ruler of continent and you have to look for your prowl in continent. As boundary between water and continent is place reached by water when ebb!”
“Okey, I agree with your idea!” said Baya. Because of the division of authority territory, there was no fight again between Sura and Baya. Both have agreed in honor of each region. But at one particular day, Sura looked for his prowl in the river. He did it stealthy so that Baya didn’t know. But one day, Baya found this unexpectedly deed. Of course Baya was very angry knowing Sura impinge his promise.
“Hey Sura, why do you impinge regulation we have agree on? How dare you entered river which representing my authority region?” asked Baya. Sura, who felt guilty, answered, “I impinge agreement? This river has water, isn’t it? And I have spelled out members that my territory is in the water, right? So, this river is my authority region.”
“What? That river is located in continent, while your area is sea. Mean, that river is my region!” Baya insist. “It can’t be like that! I have never told if ‘water’ only sea water. I think an irrigate river is also ‘water’,” answered Sura. “Do you intend to ask for trouble, Sura?” asked Baya.
“No, I think my reason is strong enough and I’m sure that I’m in the correct side!” said Sura. “You intend to angle me. I’m not as stupid as you predict!” said Baya start to fulminate. “I don’t care you bright or stupid. The important is river water and sea water are my authority!” Sura didn’t willing to fail. “If so, you mean to lie me, don’t you?! Thereby, our agreement is cancelled! The most powerful one will become single author,” said Baya. “Quarrel again? I’m not scared of you!” challenge Sura egotisticly. Than, a hard duel between Sura and Baya started again. This contention progressively awful and exclaim each other. They were pouncing, nipping, beating, and dashing against each other. During split second, water around them became squeezed by secretory blood of bodily injury from both of them. They continued until scrap furiosly without rest at all. In this awful contention, Baya got a bite on the right of his tail. Hereinafter, his tail always stiff to left side. Whereas Sura’s tail also nipped till almost break. Then Sura back to the ocean. This contention very impress society of Surabaya.

The Legend of Toba

There was a fisherman who lived in Batak Land. His name was Batara Guru Sahala. When he was angling, he caught a fish. He was surprised to find that fish because the fish could talk and it begged to set it free. He did accordingly.
After getting free, the fish changed into a beautiful woman and Sahala fell in love with her. Sahala asked her to marry him and the woman received him. However, she asked his promised not to tell anyone the secret that she was once a fish. They were very happily married, and got two daughters.
It was a pity on Sahala. One day when he got very angry with his daughters, he forgot his promise and he broke it. He told his daughters that they were the daughters of a fish.
His wife could not forgive him. Suddenly, the earth began to shake and volcanoes started to erupt. The earth cracked and formed a big hole. People said that the hole became Lake Toba.

Occurrence of Bledug Kuwu

At  Ajisaka ruled of Medang Kamolan, comes a dragon who called himself Jaka linglung. According to his testimony, he was the son Ajisaka and when it was looking for her father. Looking at his form, Ajisaka refuse to recognize it as a child. Ajisaka was trying to get rid of the dragon, but with a very subtle way. To the dragon, Ajisaka said he would admit it as a child, if the dragon manages to kill the white crocodile Cengkar incarnation of Gods in the South Seas. Encouraged by the desire to be recognized as a son, Jake linglung Ajisaka request was agreed to kill Gods Cengkar.
Jaka linglung immediately departed. By Ajisaka, Jaka linglung is not allowed by road so as not to disturb the tranquility of the population. Instead, Ajisaka require Jaka linglung for depart  to the South Seas through the soil. In short, Jaka linglung also reached the South Sea and managed to kill Dewata Cengkar. As departure, the return to any Medang Kamolan Jaka linglung through the soil. And as proof that he has successfully reached the South Sea and kill Dewata Cengkar, Jake daze not forget to bring a bundle of grass “grinting wulung” and salty sea water.
Several times Jaka linglung trying to come to the surface, because it thinks it has reached the destination. The first time he appeared on Ngembak Village (now City District Purwodadi), then at Jono (Sub Tawangharjo), then in Grabagan, Crewek, and the last in Kuwu (third entry Kradenan District). In this Kuwu, reputedly Jaka linglung had time to unwind. And this is where the emergence of which is now believed to be the origin of the emergence of  Bledhug Kuwu.

The Legend of  Bledug Kuwu Purwodadi Grobogan Central Java

Narrated, at approximately the 7th century AD, the area included within the Kingdom of Grobogan Medang Kamolan ruled by Sanjaya dynasty / Syailendra. One king of this dynasty is Gods Cengkar, a supposedly very fond of eating human flesh. Due to a strange king’s favorite, make people feel scared. They do not want to be a meal of the king who thirst for blood. Various ways done to fight the king, but all in vain. Nothing can beat the King’s supernatural power.
Some time later, comes the Ajisaka, a wanderer, who are concerned with the suffering endured by the people. Ajisaka was then trying to stop the habit of the king. Witnessed by thousands of pairs of eyes, Ajisaka also challenging contest with the King’s supernatural powers. Many people who doubted the ability Ajisaka, given its very small. But whatever, people still hope to Ajisaka. The king who accepted the challenge Ajisaka just laughing. King also offers, if if Ajisaka able to defeat him, then Ajisaka entitled to a prize of half the kingdom. Conversely, if Ajisaka lose, then the king will take Ajisaka body.
Ajisaka also approved all the king’s offer. The last request Ajisaka to the king is, if he lost and his body eaten by the king, begged Ajisaka later his bones were planted in soil-sized wide headband. Of course, the king immediately said yes and did not suspect that it is Ajisaka headband headband containing supernatural powers. Ajisaka immediately release the headband and then laid it on the ground. Miraculously, headband was changed to widen. King of the Gods Cengkar shift the place of establishment. It goes along with the widening of Ajisaka headband, until finally the Gods Cengkar splashed in the South Seas. However Cengkar Gods do not die, instead, her body transformed into a crocodile (crocodile white). After the death of the Gods Cengkar, people then crowned as king in Medang Ajisaka Kamolan.

Bledug Kuwu

Bleduk Kuwu is a cauldron of mud (mud volcano) located in the village of Kuwu, District Kradenan, Grobogan district, Central Java Province. This place can be taken approximately 28 km to the east of the city Purwodadi. Bleduk Kuwu is one of the prime attractions in this area, In addition to eternal fire (mrapen), and Reservoir (Kedungombo).
Objects of interest from bleduk kuwu are small eruptions that contain salt and place on a regular basis, between 2 and 3 minutes.
